Some Pulitzer winners find out the old-fashioned way—when it’s announced

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Although Pulitzer Prize winners are supposed to be kept secret until they’re announced, imageplaces like the New York Times and the LA Times (where I’ve worked) always somehow manage to have the Champagne on ice for that special moment when word “comes over the wire.” Apparently, that doesn’t happen everywhere.

Add: The editor of the Tuscaloosa (Alabama) News, which won for breaking news, posts on Jim Romenesko’s Facebook wall that “we were in the dark til we saw it on the Pulitzer website.” Ditto The Stranger, the Seattle alt-weekly which won for feature writing.
