Student leaders pull plug on Daily Cal initiative—during vote

Thursday, April 12, 2012

The Daily Californian had hoped that UC Berkeley students would approve a $2 per imagesemester fee to help erase some of the financially-strapped independent newspaper’s red ink. Voting began Tuesday and was to end today. But that was before Associated Students president Vishalli Loomba issued an executive order yesterday to invalidate the initiative, saying it violates UC policy, Berkeleyside’s Tracey Taylor says.

Add: Daily Cal’s editor, Tomer Ovadia, says he’s shocked: “It came out of nowhere. We met with the ASUC President yesterday and six hours later they issued the order.”
