If the troubled Alameda County supervisor reads newspaper editorial pages, she’s seen this message enough lately. The Chronicle’s call for her resignation includes this prelude: “Plenty of politicians have gone into rehab—some secretly, some quite publicly—and returned to perform their duties with distinction.” And then adds:
The disturbing aspect of the Lockyer case is the growing evidence that her fitness as a supervisor has been impaired to a irreparable degree. The issue is not the salaciousness of some of the reported episodes. The core problem is that her erratic behavior and cloudy, cryptic and sometimes contradictory explanations of events have left her with near-zero credibility.
