Chronicle endorses Pete Stark’s Democratic challenger

Friday, May 4, 2012

You know you’re in trouble when a newspaper’s editorial begins the way the Chronicle’s did this morning: “Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, should have retired by now.” And that’s maybe the kindest part. “The Democratic establishment would prefer to let the 80-year-old Stark leave on his own schedule. That is the way things work in Washington—and helps explain why Washington is not working for us,” it goes on. The Chronicle endorsed Stark’s Democratic challenger, 31-year-old prosecutor and Dublin city councilman Eric Swalwell.

Add: The endorsement comes on the heels of Stark’s disastrous visit to the newspaper’s editorial board, which produced this gaffe, and this one.
