Oscar Grant’s relatives say they weren’t told of ex-BART cop’s appeal

Friday, May 11, 2012

Did no one notify relatives of the slain Oscar Grant III about former BART cop Johannes Mehserle’s recent appeal to overturn his manslaughter conviction in Grant’s death? That’s what Grant’s mother and uncle tell a news conference in Oakland this morning. They’re angry at both Alameda County district attorney Nancy O’Malley’s office, which prosecuted Mehserle, and state Attorney General Kamala Harris’s office, which represented the DA in opposing the former cop’s bid for an appeal. KQED says neither office responded immediately.

Add: Although Mehserle has served his prison sentence, his lawyer says he wants to clear the felony conviction from his record in hopes of one day re-entering law enforcement.
