Another bizarre episode from Rep. Pete Stark (D-Fremont), who is 80 and seeking re-election after 20 terms, captured on Chronicle video. This time he accuses Debra J. Saunders, the Chronicle’s token conservative columnist, of giving money to the campaign of his Democratic challenger, Eric Swalwell. Not true. Saunders tells him as much as soon as the accusation is made—during Stark’s visit with the Chronicle editorial board. He shuffles through some notes, sees he’s got it wrong, and recants.
Add: Stark apparently confused Saunders with someone whose name isn’t even close, and who’s a member of the Dublin City Council. He then tried to explain away the confusion as the work of “a 16-year-old investigative reporter,” whom he identified as his son. Chronicle
Noted: This, by the way, comes on the heels of his wild “bribery” accusations against Swalwell, for which he later apologized.
