The new president of San Francisco State University to replace the retiring Robert Corrigan is Leslie E. Wong, 62, who has been the head of Northern Michigan University since 2004. Wong grew up in East Oakland. The selection committee was apparently sold on his ability as a fundraiser and his commitment to social justice issues. His mother, of Mexican descent, came from a family of farmworkers; his father, a Chinese American, was an executive at National Dollar Stores. SFSU press release; Chronicle
