Gov. Jerry Brown drops some particularly bad news for the weekend: California’s budget deficit has ballooned to $16 billion—not the $9.2 billion that was talked about in January—and the state faces far more drastic cuts to schools and public safety than previously anticipated. Brown made the announcement today. He’ll present a revised budget plan Monday for the coming fiscal year that will rely in large part on voters approving higher taxes in November. AP
