Today’s compromise to narrow the remaining differences in the $92 billion budget passed by the Legislature (but not yet signed into law) whittles some more at already pared-down services for the poor and needy college students. Examples: It cuts from four years to two the time limit for unemployed recipients of CalWorks grants to find work; cuts subsidized child care by 8.7 percent and suspends cost-of-living adjustments for child care costs until mid-2015; eliminates the state’s Healthy Families Program; and, starting in the 2013-14 school year, cuts Cal Grants for needy college students.
