[Update] The massive Pier 29 sign crashed to the ground at 2:45 p.m., followed by another huge chunk of concrete not long after firefighters tamped down the blaze, the Chronicle says. Although the pier figures prominently in America’s Cup plans, the century-old building has been vacant for months and early word is that today’s blaze won’t impact the regatta.
The fire was reported about 1:50 this afternoon at the historic structure where construction is underway for the 2013 America’s Cup. Flames could be seen shooting through the roof near the front of the building. SFPD has the surrounding streets closed off. The photo from CBS 5 is from shortly after the fire broke out. CBS 5 has raw video.
