In Berkeley, a monograph on the mayor creates a stir

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Author John Curl’s 54-page takedown of Berkeley mayor Tom Bates (whose wife is state Sen. Loni Hancock), first published in the Berkeley Daily Planet, is getting some legs. Sac Bee political columnist Dan Walters says the tome is “creating a stir in Berkeley’s hyper-active political community, where minute shades of ideological difference can have a major effect.”

Add: Curl’s thesis is that despite his carefully-cultivated liberal credentials, Bates has helped do the bidding of developers, chief among them UC Berkeley. Its title: “Tom Bates and the Secret Government of Berkeley.” You can read it via the Daily Planet.

Bonus: Rebecca Rosen Lum’s piece in April for Berkeley Patch on the mayor’s re-election bid.
