Jean Quan, back from Brazil, says ‘I was given incorrect data’ on crime plan

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Mayor Jean Quan’s explanation for claiming incorrectly for eight months that 90 percent of Oakland’s homicides and shootings took place within 100 city blocks? She was given “incorrect data,” she says, in a statement released on her second day back from an environmental conference in Brazil. A top aide last week acknowledged that the 100-blocks theme was flawed while Quan was out of town.
Add: Although it’s unlikely she’ll be referring to it anymore as her “100-blocks” plan, the Chronicle says the mayor nonetheless is sticking with her strategy. She’s quoted as saying it is “sound and has merit.” The mayor’s statement after the jump:
"I was given incorrect data last year regarding areas with a high concentration of homicides in our city. I have been using that data to describe the 100 Blocks Initiative. As Mayor I should have taken more time to analyze and verify the data and its accuracy as it related to the concentration of violent crime in our community. This is regrettable and I take full responsibility for the error."
