The veteran no-nonsense street reporter who has been a Bay Area fixture at KTVU 2 for more than three decades is hanging up her microphone. She announced today that she will retire in February of next year (presumably when her contract is up) after 35 years at the station. Besides winning a slew of broadcast awards, Williams gained lots of admirers for her investigative abilities and an on-air persona that emphasized serious over silly, a receding quality in news broadcasting. Former sheriff Michael Hennessey once called her “a pitbull dog with a heart.” There’s a long piece devoted to the announcement, including a slide show, at KTVU’s website.
