Matt Groening signs off from ‘Life in Hell’

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Another comic icon bites the dust. “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening has produced his last “Life in Hell” and the syndicated strip will close shop officially July 13. “I’ve had great fun, in a Sisyphean kind of way, but the time has come to let Binky and Sheba and Bongo and Akbar and Jeff take some time off,” Groening emails Rob Tornoe at Poynter.

Add: The modern classic began at Wet magazine in 1978, then moved to the defunct LA Reader before settling in at the (pre-Village Voice Media) LA Weekly, after which its client list ballooned to 250 papers. More recently the newspaper count dwindled, and the folks who run VVM in Phoenix dropped it from LA Weekly in 2009.
