Middle school from hell? Nearly half of students suspended in a year

Friday, June 15, 2012

The Contra Costa Times’ Theresa Harrington writes about a middle school in Concord where nearly half the 576 students were suspended at one time or another last year, with 166 of the suspensions due to violence or drugs. A couple of teachers, one a substitute, courageously came forward to tell Harrington about how discipline at Oak Grove Middle School has broken down. Among other things, they say the new principal sent unruly kids back to their classrooms almost as fast as they could toss them out.
Related: The California Department of Education is out with its annual Academic Performance Index, rating the state’s public schools. In case you wondered, Oak Grove is in the bottom rung.
