It seems to happen every few years. Under the most aggressive new strategy being kicked around among several city agencies, private automobiles would be moved off Market in both directions between Franklin and Steuart streets. The aim: to accommodate the growing number of bicyclists and pedestrians and, as one official puts it, “re-establish the street as the premier cultural, civic, transportation and economic center of San Francisco and the Bay Area.” There’s sure to be fierce opposition, the Chronicle’s Michael Cabanatuan says.
