SFMOMA acquires once-controversial George Moscone bust

Friday, June 1, 2012

Under The Big Black Sun at MOCARobert Arneson’s “Portrait of George (Moscone),” which has been in private hands since being rejected by the city’s arts commission in the early 1980s, has been acquired by SFMOMA. It went on display today as part of a gallery devoted to the work of the artist and former head of the ceramics department at UC Davis, who died in 1992.

Add: The bust of the slain former mayor stirred controversy in 1981 at its unveiling at the Moscone Center for its depiction of elements related to Moscone’s 1978 assassination by former Supervisor Dan White. Arneson refused to alter it. Mercury News
