Ceremonial groundbreaking is Thursday for the new $102-million control tower at SFO, with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood among the dignitaries on hand. Construction is expected to be finished in 2014, after which the FAA will spend another year installing the navigation control equipment. Architecturally speaking, the Chronicle’s John King likens the 221-foot aluminum tower to a “stylized torch” and likes it, based on the drawings.
