Think this is big? Try imagining a Warriors arena

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Need a hint of just how tough it’s likely to be for the Warriors to build a basketball arena along the Embarcadero at Piers 30-32? South Beach resident and arena opponent Lawrence Stokus says this about it:

It will be a wall, nine stories tall and two football fields long, that walls off the Bay. Walkways around the perimeter of this massive construction are not “open space”. On Giants’ home games, the streets within (say) 3 to 5 blocks becomes congested and sometimes certain streets become gridlocked with automobiles.

The talk is 200 events per year (to make the Arena economic) plus 81 Giants games per year at home. An event per day (on average) would mean continual automobile congestion. It would be like living at the entrance to the Los Angeles airport.
