Apple abandons ‘green’ certification for 39 of its products

Monday, July 9, 2012

You’d maybe think that the Cupertino-based company, already under fire for the sweat shops that make some of its products in China, would be leery of doing anything to further damage its image. But Apple has decided, without explanation, to withdraw 39 of its products from EPEAT, the industry group that sets minimum standards for energy efficiency, use of toxic materials and disposal.

From the Mercury News:

Apple notified EPEAT of its withdrawal in a letter on Thursday that didn't elaborate on the company's reasons.

"I've had some conversations, and Apple has said that their design direction is not compatible with EPEAT standards," said Robert Frisbee, the CEO of EPEAT, in an interview Monday. "It's kind of odd since they've helped design them."
