Filming continues around Oakland for “Fruitvale,” the film from actor Forest Whitaker’s production company that chronicles the death of Oscar Grant III, shot and killed by ex-BART cop Johannes Mehserle. Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help”), who plays Grant’s mother, tweeted last week that she’d wrapped her scenes.
So who’s playing Mehserle? Not clear, says Jon Brooks at KQED’s News Fix blog. The cast list doesn’t provide a clue, and not even Grant’s uncle, Cephus Johnson, who’s kept up with the film, says he knows.
As for Mehserle, out of prison and continuing life outside police work, his defense attorney Michael Rains tells Brooks he hopes the movie “capture[s] the shock and the horror that was on Johannes’s face” after the shooting. And there’s this morsel:
Rains said that Mehserle's been "doing odd jobs. He's working, he's doing well."
