In Berkeley, uncertainty over an historic Bay Area broadcast venue

Thursday, July 19, 2012

The KRE building near Ashby Avenue and Shellmound Street, built in 1937 and among the oldest broadcast facilities in the Bay Area, is home to the California Historical Radio Society. But the building’s fate, and the radio society’s future there, is in jeopardy now that the building’s owner, Inner City Broadcasting, has filed for bankruptcy.

The group is trying to raise $750,000 to buy the property before it’s otherwise liquidated. It has raised $568,000 so far and hopes Saturday’s “Radio Day by the Bay” event there will help move the needle. Below: society president Steve Cushman’s video pitch.
