Kitty Wells, country music queen was 92

Monday, July 16, 2012

The performer whose success helped open doors for a slew of women in country music died today at her home outside Nashville at age 92. Her signature 1952 hit “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” (the clip is from an early Grand Ole Opry performance) became a pre-feminist anthem. Hard to believe NBC Radio banned it at first, saying it was too “suggestive.” Obit: NYT
