Pope names Oakland’s Cordileone as next San Francisco archbishop

Oakland’s Roman Catholic Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, 56, has been appointed by the Vatican to become the next Archbishop of San Francisco to replace soon-to-retire Archbishop George Niederauer. He’s to be installed Oct. 4. As chair of the church’s national subcommittee to protect and promote traditional marriage, the archbishop-designate is a chief supporter of California’s Prop 8, prohibiting same sex marriage. He’s been Oakland’s bishop since 2009. Catholic San Francisco
