After ‘nationwide’ search, Mayor Lee picks longtime pal to head SFPUC

Thursday, August 23, 2012

After what he called “a long and exhaustive nationwide search,” Mayor Ed Lee has appointed longtime friend and Willie Brown protégé Harlan Kelly to head the city’s Public Utilities Commission. Kelly is the husband of Naomi Kelly, whom Lee already placed in his old job of city administrator after becoming mayor. They’re now the most dynamic duo with a hand in San Francisco government (excluding Brown and Rose Pak, of course) that you’re not likely to hear much about, outside the society columns.

Harlan Kelly has been the No. 2 at the PUC. He and his wife were involved with Progress for All, the group behind the controversial Run Ed Run campaign that “persuaded” Lee to break his pledge not to run for the office after being appointed to replace former Mayor Gavin Newsom. They go way back with Brown and the mayor. Lee stood in their wedding; Brown officiated. Chronicle
