Oakland’s Skyline High forfeits game; only 13 players academically eligible

Friday, August 31, 2012

Skyline High School, Tom Hanks’ alma mater in the Oakland hills, has forfeited tonight’s football game with Acalanes High in Lafayette, and may have to forfeit the entire season. The reason? Only 13 players were academically eligible under new Oakland Athletic League policies requiring at least a 2.0 grade point average to play.

Skyline is consistently at the top of Oakland’s public high schools when it comes to the state’s academic performance index. Kind of makes you wonder how it’s the only school in town, apparently, that can’t field a football team. Oakland Tribune
