That controversial proposal for the Modesto Irrigation District to sell Tuolumne River water to San Francisco, which riled farmers and others, is off the table. The irrigation district voted 5-0 to kill the plan Tuesday, leaving the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission empty-handed. SFPUC had offered to pay about 70 times the going rate for farmers to buy 2 million gallons a day as backup to water it takes from Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Modesto Bee
