The ambassador who was among the four people killed during the storming of the U. S. Consulate in Benghazi yesterday grew up in Piedmont and was a graduate of UC Berkeley and Hastings College of Law. J. Christopher Stevens was the son of retired Marin Symphony cellist Mary Commanday and stepson of Robert Commanday, founder of San Francisco Classical Voice magazine and a former classical music critic for the Chronicle. The Chronicle has posted a story with more on Stevens.
