After 49ers flee to South Bay, SF hopes to play pretend Super Bowl host

Monday, October 15, 2012

How’s this for slight of hand? Mayor Ed Lee and several prominent civic leaders are reportedly working on a plan to have San Francisco designated as the host city for the Super Bowl in 2016 or 2017. Which would be a pretty neat trick since by then the 49ers will be settled into their new Santa Clara stadium on San Jose’s doorstep.

Of course it may not be a problem within the reality-challenged geography of professional sports, where “New York’s” two NFL teams play in New Jersey and where a baseball team in Orange County (Anaheim to be precise) calls itself the Los Angeles Angels. Chronicle
