Barbara Lee: one race for Congress no one will bite nails over

Monday, October 22, 2012

Just how “safe” is Rep. Barbara Lee’s overwhelmingly Democratic 13th congressional district seat that includes Oakland and Berkeley? In the last three elections, she’s had no less than 84 percent of the vote, and this time around, redistricting didn’t reduce her base. No fellow Democrat bothered to challenge her.

Still, her November opponent, Dr. Marilyn Singleton, a conservative independent who’s raised $40,000 to Lee’s $1 million, says she’s getting a warm response: “They like the idea that I’m fresh, they’re tired of stale ideas,” she tells the Mercury News.
