Manuel Ortega, 22, the first of six defendants in the 2009 gang rape of a Richmond High School girl outside a school dance, was sentenced to 32 years in prison today. He pleaded guilty last month to avoid a life sentence, if convicted—a plea deal that prosecutors and the victim approved to spare her from having to testify at trial. Julie Brown and Jennifer Baires at Richmond Confidential were in the Martinez courtroom and write about it.
