Ross Mirkarimi and the Chronicle op-ed that wasn’t

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

That op-ed by journalist and former Ross Mirkarimi girlfriend Evelyn Nieves in his defense that the Chronicle passed on may end up getting more attention than if they’d ran it. Larry Bush at CitiReport posted the Nieves piece Monday and a few hours later Chronicle columnist Debra J. Saunders, who’s been outspoken in assailing Mayor Ed Lee and the City Hall crowd for treating Mirkarimi shabbily, did the same.

For anyone who’s been away on Mars, the Board of Supervisors is expected to decide today whether the suspended sheriff loses his job. It will take three of the 11 supes to save him.

Noted: Bruce Brugmann over at the Bay Guardian asks, “Will there be some profiles of courage?” in reference to the supervisors’ vote. And while praising Saunders, he refers to the Chronicle’s handling of the Mirkarimi story as “shameful crucifixion coverage.”
