California election surprise: Democrats win supermajority

Relatively few people saw it coming but Democrats appear to have picked up a supermajority in both houses of the state Legislature last night, leaving Republicans essentially irrelevant in Sacramento. As things stand, looks like Democrats will have 54 of the 80 Assembly seats and 27 of the 40 Senate seats. Chronicle
