If you look at the last couple of seconds before the cutaway from this live report by CBS 5’s Anne Makovec Wednesday you’ll see the camera angle swish to the ground. That’s when a group of five men rushed up and grabbed it off a tripod, punching cameraman Gregg Welk before getting away in a Mercedes-Benz. It happened near 42nd and Broadway in Oakland, in front of Oakland Technical High School.
It’s the eighth such reported assault on working media in Oakland in recent months. Sources at CBS 5 tell the Chronicle’s Henry K. Lee that the station henceforth intends to send security guards with its people covering Oakland, day or night.
