Here’s how AOL FanHouse columnist David Whitley began his Wednesday column about the Bay Area’s abundantly tatooed hot new sports star: “San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick is going to be a big-time NFL quarterback. That must make the guys in San Quentin happy.”
And that’s got some folks upset, especially the young QB’s parents, Teresa and Rick Kaepernick of Turlock. (That’s the family, as pictured by the Modesto Bee, for a story in February.) Teresa vents her displeasure to USA Today with what she sees as an unfair attack on her son’s character. Excerpt after the jump:
Teresa didn't encourage Colin, a 4.0 high school student who's never been arrested, to get his tattoos when he came home with the idea early in his college career at Nevada. But she and Rick conceded that Colin could make his own decisions. Colin chose Bible verses and had them inscribed on his biceps.
"Colin's a fairly religious kid, but he's not in your face about it," Rick said by phone. "It's more about him and what he believes."
