Contractors pour in big bucks to try and influence BART election

For those who wonder why strange political stuff happens when it comes to BART, The Bay Citizen’s Zusha Elinson writes today that the transit agency has doled out $2 billion in contracts so far this year alone. Now, for the news: incumbent director Lynette Sweet, who’s been less-than-forgiving toward contractors she sees as ripping off minority subcontractors is—surprise—facing the wrath of big contractors. Some are pouring big bucks into the campaign of one of her opponents—Zakhary Mallett, 25, who until recently was a grad student at UC Berkeley.
