The Mercury News’ Monte Poole aptly points out that the decision in the next few days by athletic director Sandy Barbour (pictured) to either keep or cut ties with Jeff Tedford represents a turning point for the Cal football program. And that has little to do with whether Tedford, whose teams are 23-26 over the last five years, is deserving or not. (He’d be long gone at any of football’s elite or aspire-to-be-elite programs.)
Rather, it’s whether there’s enough of a pulse among big-money donors to pony up the $6.9 million needed to buy out the remainder of his contract.
