Jack Gilbert, prize-winning poet was 87

The unconventional prize-winning poet who railed against the Beats of the 1950s and any other school he considered too ephemeral or inconsequential over a half century of work died Tuesday at a nursing home in Berkeley after developing pneumonia. He was 87 and was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Obits: LA Times; Chronicle
