Blogger on North Oakland gentrification: ‘Please don’t call it NOBE’

Thursday, December 13, 2012

Sarah Han at The Bold Italic has a nice rant today about the propensity of real estate professionals to invent place names out of whole cloth to, shall we say, finesse geographic marketing challenges. The latest such “place”: NOBE, which stands for North Oakland Berkeley Emeryville. Han’s newly-acquired home in the Longfellow neighborhood is within NOBE’s mythical boundaries. She’s well qualified to sound off on this one. Same thing happened to her old Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco when home-sellers starting calling it NOPA, which she says also “irritated the hell out of me.”

Oaklanders, especially, will get a kick out of her spoofed subtitles to the Hitler video.
