John McAfee turns up in Guatemala, is detained, and quickly denied asylum*

Thursday, December 6, 2012

The wacko journey of the one-time Silicon Valley mogul has hit a speed bump with his arrest in Guatemala. Reason: entering the country illegally. He says he’ll seek asylum there. [And AP is already reporting that Guatemala has said no to that, apparently paving the way for his deportation to Belize.] In the video posted to YouTube by Vice magazine, the 67-year-old McAfee Associates founder banters nervously with folks outside the Guatemala City hotel where Interpol agents took him into custody and even takes time out to play a flute.

He’s a person of interest in a murder in Belize, but there’s no warrant for his arrest there and it’s unclear why he’s gone on the lam, playing 007, donning disguises and even pretending to be in Mexico. He claims the Belizean cops are out to kill him. Folks there (and elsewhere) continue to question his mental state. AP

After the jump, a pic of him being questioned by Guatemala National Police, which distributed the photo.
