Mayor’s housing chief takes more licks; Willie Brown’s on the case

Monday, December 10, 2012

Mayor Ed Lee’s housing authority director, Henry Alvarez III—under fire for alleged abusive workplace behavior—takes another hit today in the Chronicle, which details a string of allegations in jobs he left behind in Oregon and Texas. Among other things, it suggests the mayor is taking a different line now about Alvarez than he did as city administrator when he led the team that brought Alvarez from San Antonio:

When asked if he knew Alvarez had been reprimanded over an "inappropriate outburst" at a member of his executive team while heading the San Antonio Housing Authority, Lee told The Chronicle: "Yes, we were aware of everything."

Asked later about the Oregon lawsuits, Lee's spokeswoman, Christine Falvey, said Lee "didn't recall being made aware of cases like that."

Meanwhile, Chronicle columnist and mayoral influencer Willie Brown suggests the Alvarez hubbub is no big deal.
