Merchants restive amid Valencia street restaurant boom

Monday, December 17, 2012

A merchants’ group has called for a moratorium on new eateries along Valencia between 16th and 24th streets and the Chronicle says another may follow. So is there a voice for free enterprise among them? Sort of. Maybe:

But some restaurateurs on Valencia think a moratorium would be heavy-handed and unnecessary when a free market should eventually settle the number and quality of restaurants in the area.

"I honestly don't understand it," said Joe Hargrave, who opened Tacolicious a year ago. "I think it's kind of absurd. Yes, we don't want formula retail and chain stores in the area. But we don't get the right to decide which small business gets to open and which does not."
