‘Fruitvale,’ the Oscar Grant III treatment, wins top honors at Sundance

Monday, January 28, 2013

Hollywood’s version of the last day in the life of slain BART passenger Oscar Grant III got rave reviews at Sundance, and, over the weekend, official accolades to go with them. Writer-director Ryan Coogler’s film, the cast of which includes Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. That’s a scene from the film, with actor Michael B. Jordan starring as Grant.

You won’t see anyone playing the role of Johannes Mehserle, the ex-BART cop who served time for manslaughter. In the film, the name of Grant’s killer has been changed.
