In what’s surely to give it a boost as a tourist destination, Pinnacles National Monument in the rugged range near Hollister—famous for its rocky spires and as a home to California condors—has become the nation’s 59th national park. President Obama signed the legislation yesterday.
From Paul Spitler, director of the Wilderness Society, as quoted in the Mercury News:
"This will literally put Pinnacles on the map. You have millions of people who drive on the highways right past Pinnacles and don't know that it's there. But national parks are special. They are significant. I think you'll see an increase in visitation."
