Romance scam: elderly Bay Area man appears to have been ‘Te’oed’

Manti Te’o, who claims to have been duped by maybe the world’s nuttiest Internet hoax ever, could perhaps identify with this: A 72-year-old South Bay man gets a cold call from a young real estate broker. She wants to talk about refinancing his home. They meet. She flirts. He gives her a diamond ring that once belonged to his ex-wife. And that’s just the start of it. He’s now not only heartbroken, but bankrupt. Oh, and she’s been arrested. Mercury News
