Here’s something guaranteed not to make you feel warm and fuzzy. Remember Raymond Zack, the troubled Alameda man who waded into the water and eventually drowned off Crown Memorial State Beach in 2011 while police and firefighters stood around and watched from the shore? (That’s a familiar photo of the scene at the so-called “slow motion drowning” captured by the Oakland Local blog.) The family is seeking damages in court, and yesterday an attorney for the city argued that while it was a “tragic, unfortunate situation,” first responders were under no legal duty to try and save the man’s life.
