Oakland’s unemployment rate remains stubbornly high—at above 13 percent. And back in 2010 the city was able to procure $725,000 in state and federal on-the-job training funds for the unemployed. So how did it turn out? Owing to political infighting and bureaucratic dysfunction, the city has returned $644,000 of the money. Poof. The fiasco came to light at the end of January during a city council committee meeting. Oakland Tribune’s Tammerlin Drummond writes about it.
