For any who wondered why Cal officials, who fired Jeff Tedford after a 3-9 season, are so eager to turn the football program around: there’s mounting pressure to pay for that $484-million Memorial Stadium renovation, and losing teams don’t fill seats. Thus, despite the grand opening last season, 1,900 of the 2,900 premium seats—the ones big-money donors have been asked to shell out $40,000 to $225,000 for—are unsold. The university has brought in a new sales team to try and jump-start things, the Chronicle says.
