An early morning fire at Alice Waters’ iconic Berkeley restaurant was contained before it caused widespread destruction, but officials on scene say there appears to be structural damage to beams. The 3 a.m. fire broke out near the front of the restaurant, at 1517 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. A fire official tells Berkeleyside that Waters was visibly upset upon arriving. A 1982 fire at the restaurant came within minutes of destroying the building. No word yet on what impact this morning’s blaze will have.
