Chez Panisse damaged by early morning fire*

Friday, March 8, 2013

An early morning fire at Alice Waters’ iconic Berkeley restaurant was contained before it caused widespread destruction, but officials on scene say there appears to be structural damage to beams. The 3 a.m. fire broke out near the front of the restaurant, at 1517 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. A fire official tells Berkeleyside that Waters was visibly upset upon arriving. A 1982 fire at the restaurant came within minutes of destroying the building. No word yet on what impact this morning’s blaze will have.

*Fire officials say early indications are that an electrical failure is to blame, although they weren't immediately ruling out the possibility of arson, says Berkeleyside, which is up with a lengthier post and lots of photos
