Consultant calls Oakland’s the ‘most understaffed’ police department in U.S.

Thursday, March 7, 2013

A consultant brought in to help Oakland devise a new crime-fighting strategy says that based on the volume of 911 calls he believes Oakland has “the most understaffed police department in the United States.” (It has slightly more than 600 uniformed officers.)

Consultant and former Houston police chief Robert Wasserman, whose team includes former NYPD and Los Angeles top cop William Bratton, spoke to several dozen residents at City Hall last night. The aim: to engage residents and the city’s political leadership in the crime-fighting effort, the Chronicle says.
